TJFS' CEO Michael Barnett

You’ve heard me say this before. But I feel it’s important to share how we are trying to help TJFS’ client families who continue to face financial hardship. Yes, the unemployment rate for Hillsborough County continues to fall and is currently at 5.6% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). And yes, many of the families that we assist have found work. Unfortunately, a majority of these families are under employed and barely able to cover the necessities. The slightest financial deviation, such as a car or air conditioner repair, or even a roof leak can create a crisis situation. A prime example: the exorbitant cost of back-to-school supplies.

When I was younger I would typically go shopping for a few new articles of clothing, a pair of sneakers and basic supplies for back-to-school. Today, it is a completely different story. Spending this year for a student, grades K-12, is expected to average $634.78, according to the National Retail Federation. For most people, let alone a family just able to make ends meet, that figure is daunting. We need your help. Tampa Jewish Family Services will assist over 250 children in the next 30 days. We want to alleviate part of the expense for as many families as we can. Please consider making a donation or purchasing school supplies to drop off at our offices. With your help TJFS will be able to make it a bit easier for those families who struggle day-to-day.
